She’s the American record-holder in the 200 back (1:47.1) and the presumptive NCAA favorite in the 100 back (49.6). These rankings in no way mean that all of these 20 swimmers will be NCAA standouts, and they certainly don’t mean that no swimmer left off this list will make big contributions at the NCAA level. Jared Anderson swam for nearly twenty years. Alabama junior Rhyan White defended her SEC titles in the 100 and 200 back and added another in the 100 fly this weekend in Athens, Georgia. And the two groups are definitely the best recruiting classes we’ve ever ranked, stretching back to 2013. Still, her mile is only two seconds out of NCAA scoring range, and is the best in the class by a huge margin – something like seven seconds. Regan Smith, Isabelle Stadden and Phoebe Bacon are three of the best backstroke prospects we’ve ever ranked, and all three are much faster in both backstrokes than Baker was at this point in her career. I’m confused a little bit. All of the numbers. Like most of our rankings, these placements are subjective. So they’ve slid down even a little bit further than they were in our original ranks. Like Keating, she’s got great relay value with her 59-low speed, and a 22.3 sprint free time should make her a free relay factor as well, even if her 200 breast needs some improvements to crack NCAA scoring. Seems only logical for Bacon and Stadden to be switched. Lillie Nordmann is awfully good in her own right. Best Times: 100 back – 49.66, 200 back – 1:47.16, 200 free – 1:43.27, 100 fly – 50.45, 200 fly – 1:51.24, 100 free – 48.07, 50 free – 22.51, 500 free – 4:37.10, 200 IM – 1:56.58, 400 IM – 4:14.03. Walsh also has the class’s best 200 IM and is three tenths behind the class 400 IM leader. He's not sick of swimming yet. That’s pretty huge. After we noted in last year’s ranks that Sticklen was improving her 200 fast, she’s now focusing in on the shorter end of the distance spectrum. 4. Stadden had a big long course summer, too, going from 2:11 to 2:08 in the 200 meter backstroke (though her 100 has remained the same as it was at this point last year). (It’s not a perfect measure, but a decent way to track where swimmers are at right now, given that the individual swimmers will probably get faster, but so will the NCAA scoring times year-to-year). Her 100 fly is far-and-away her best time, and is already within NCAA scoring range. Bray isn’t yet as big a threat to free relays, but since last year’s rankings, she’s dropped her freestyles from 23.0/51.1 to 22.7/49.2. Anna Keating is a big in-state pickup, a 59.0/2:09.2 breaststroker who can chip in behind Walsh or even take over the breaststrokes if Walsh focuses elsewhere. Some of that, like with Ackerman, is a product of some fast risers into our top 10. That seems wrong. Isabelle Stadden is 51.2/1:50.3 out of high school. Yes, I see now. Cal has a great outgoing backstroke group (Keaton Blovad, Courtney Mykkanen) and luckily for them, the national recruiting class is one of the strongest backstroke fields in years. Best Times: 400 IM – 4:07.63, 200 IM – 1:58.07, 1650 free – 16:30.02, 1000 free – 9:39.41, 500 free – 4:43.80, 200 free – 1:47.34, 100 free – 50.00. PHOENIX, Arizona, January 11. Considering Smith is likely to focus more on both backstrokes, Bray is easily the best true flyer in the class. Here’s how it happened in numbers. Didn’t Olivia Bray almost break 50 in the 100 fly recently? But the fly/back types in this class are so good at sprint free that things get crowded at the top. Best Times: 200 back – 1:50.71, 100 back – 51.18, 400 IM – 4:09.82, 200 IM – 1:57.31, 100 fly – 52.33, 100 breast – 1:01.27, 50 free – 22.86, 100 free – 49.28. Here’s how it happened in numbers. 14. Is Walsh the only one who has a top “returning” best time next year from this class? She’s seen big improvements to her endurance (from 1:52.0 to 1:50.3 in the 200 back), but pretty slim ones in her sprints (51.3 to 51.2 in the 100 back). Algolia is fast, customizable and secure. With him, as a title contender at NCAAs in the 100 fly, I’ll give the nod to Stanford. The other incoming freshman is Isabel Gormley, an honorable mention just outside our top 20 nationally who intrigues with a 4:08.8 IM and a 4:45.3 freestyle. Chase Travis (Previous Rank: #10) – Nation’s Capital Swim Club – Newark, DE **Verbally committed to Virginia Tech** She was also 1:08 and 2:29 in long course breaststroke last summer. Topalof will bring to St. Thomas 100/200 back times that would have scored in their respective A finals at the 2020 Summit League Championships. But we didn’t really have many swimmers visibly plateau across the board – even those who didn’t drop time in their primary events mostly found drops in other races, or at least shaved a tenth or two in their top times. and get into our rankings. Greater weight is placed on known success in short course yards, so foreign swimmers are slightly devalued based on the difficulty in converting long course times to short course production. Best Times: 200 breast – 2:08.06, 100 breast – 59.76, 400 IM – 4:11.49, 200 IM – 1:58.64, 100 fly – 53.21, 200 free – 1:47.94, 100 free – 50.25, 50 free – 22.96. ! A 1:43.6 freestyler, Nordmann could pair with Smith as the bookends of a lethal 800 free relay for years. See who's moving up and who has yet to commit among the current high school junior class, which is loaded in the non-free strokes in particular. Best Times: 200 fly – 1:53.62, 100 fly – 52.08, 200 IM – 1:58.14, 200 free – 1:45.55, 100 free – 49.60, 50 free – 22.89. That would’ve been 4th at NCAAs this spring. Georgia and Michigan are pretty interchangeable imo. Oops, I forgot Smith has the AR in the back, so she has the “returning” best time there as well… never mind. At the 2020 Washington Metro Prep League Championships, she swam the 100 breast, taking 28th overall. The backstrokes stand to get absurdly fast in the NCAA when this class starts to come of age, but Atkinson has as good a shot as anybody to crack scoring early on in her career. Tea Laughlin adds 52.5/1:55.9 backstroke speed to help fill in depth behind Stadden. Best Times: 100 breast – 59.17, 200 breast – 2:11.25, 50 free – 22.35, 100 free – 49.50, 100 fly – 53.86. We continue our spring recruiting series with a team-by-team look at the best recruiting classes entering the NCAA next season. 6. She’s also cut eight tenths in the 100 fly, two full seconds in the 200 free and nearly two seconds in the 200 IM. Now, she’s one of the class’s better 50/100 freestylers, with good range to the 200 and awesome backstroke improvements. These are the stories we figured would arise more as we started to rank recruits earlier and earlier. ^^yes. Best Times:200 fly – 1:55.77, 100 fly – 52.82, 200 IM – 1:58.50, 200 back – 1:54.46, 100 back – 53.86, 200 free – 1:46.18, 100 free – 49.67. We continue our spring recruiting series with a team-by-team look at the best recruiting classes entering the NCAA next season. But what do those rankings look like four years later, when each swimmer has had an opportunity to complete a full NCAA career of competing and scoring? Cal got the third-best backstroke recruit, and she’s still a legitimate All-American contender in both distances as a freshman. Thank you! She’s incredibly fit. She’s already within scoring range in the 200 fly and a few tenths away in the 100. Bray moves up a spot in our rankings after cutting her already-class-best 51.4 in the 100 fly all the way to an absurd 50.19. Parker has a great chance to score in the 50 early in her career (it took 22.09 to make the B final last year), and has a chance to be a massive relay factor if her 100/200 develop well. 13. I also want to hear an answer about this. Tristen Ulett (Previous Rank: #12) – Dynamo Swim Club – Georgia Connections Academy – Brookhaven, GA **Verbally committed to Louisville** Albiero is a bit of a one-trick pony at this point. The other half is that Travis is still pretty well confined to the 500 and 1650 free – she doesn’t quite have the speed yet to factor into a 200 free or 800 free relay. Back and fly are really stacked up, and a lot of the top swimmers swim both strokes. Virginia got an amazing all-around recruit in Alex Walsh, who probably projects best as a breaststroker/IMer (58.19/2:05.8 breaststroke; 1:53.6/4:07.9 IM), but could also swim backstroke (50.8/1:51.4) or freestyle (22.0/48.9/1:45.0). Phoebe Bacon (Previous Rank: #6) – Nation’s Capital Swim Club – Stone Ridge School – Herndon, VA **Verbally committed to Wisconsin** It’s hard to say what that does for the future – do all of them focus in on fly/back combos? Distance freestylers are pretty thin in this class, and even at the top, there’s no one coming in with NCAA scoring times, or range enough to have relay impact. Take away those, and she’s still probably top 10 by virtue of her butterfly times alone. As far as their primary events go, the 100 is basically a wash (Bacon is .05 faster), while Stadden does have a slight edge (about four tenths) in the 200. She’s way more versatile. ! Has it happened before? Georgia is having a ridiculously impressive season, though, and a very strong A&M team could also make things interesting at the 2021 SEC Champs. There’s always chatter about swimmers who develop “too early” and risk plateauing late in high school. Her freestyle improvements have been a bit thinner, though she did but about seven tenths in the 200 free and looks like one of the class’s better options there. Did somebody ask for another backstroker? Maybe her most eye-catching swim, though, is a wicked 4:40.64 in the 400 long course meter IM – she did that while winning gold at Junior Pan Pacs last summer. The younger sister of Stanford’s freshman All-American Lucie, Lillie Nordmann makes the biggest jumps up our ranks, surging to the top of the second tier of prospects – and her current improvement curve could have her pushing the top 5 by next spring. There were certainly plenty of swimmers who improved a lot, but most of our ranks stayed pretty close to where they were a year ago. She’ll have to improve her IMs to have a third scoring event, but should bring good value to both medley relays with her sheer speed. Crazy to think about how the first (only) edition of previous years’ rankings were released in this late-spring period, while these juniors are almost all committed already — that vs. how I’m remembering Abbey not even announcing her Cal commitment until the signing period in Nov. of her senior year. With this five-person recruiting class alone, Stanford could put together a composite 3:14.1 400 free relay (would have been 14th at 2019 NCAAs) and 6:58.9 800 free relay (13th in 2019): And that’s not even accounting for relay exchanges, or the three other highly-ranked recruiting classes Stanford already has on its roster. 4. Since the pandemic started, Nussbaum has hacked four seconds off of her 200 breast and almost a second off her 100 breast.
